How to avoid risks when using a forklift truck? ALVE reports #3

In ALVE, boom lift trucks, we are always interested in informing our community about general data of: articulated, telescopic working platforms, electric articulated boom lifts, truck-ifter, truck-mounted platform on van, man lift, but; in this opportunity we will clear curiosities related to: preventive measures using forklift trucks.

In the prevention of occupational risks, it is necessary to take into account different situations, dangers and risks that can cause damage to the operative people or who are in their surroundings.

There are many variables to consider. One of them would be the training, training of the operators that will handle these machines, in the physical and psychological aspect, as well as the evaluation of the experience they have in these activities. The presence of unprepared or unauthorized personnel in the work zones and areas considered to be at risk must be controlled.

The driver must follow at all times: the instructions and recommendations established by the manufacturer, for the proper use and maintenance of the trucks. The first thing we have to do, before starting the truck (but after having checked it), is to make sure that nobody is around.

Fulfill the speed limits faithfully, driving slowly on uneven or uneven terrain. At crossings and in places where visibility is not perfect due to any obstacle or blind spot, you must slow down and stop at those corners or curves without visibility.

Play the horn, whenever you approach exits, corners, corridors, pedestrian zones, etc., especially in areas where there is no visibility. Reverse, if possible, reverse gear, although for the descent of slopes with load, it is essential to do so to avoid instability and possible rollover. In spite of what is highlighted in the previous section, you must drive in reverse, when carrying bulky loads that hinder visibility to the front. We will always stop the truck gradually so as not to subject it to an unnecessary effort, which could cause an accident.

We will always maintain the load in a safe and stable way, we will never drive with the forks elevated (neither loaded nor empty); We will always circulate with the forks at about 15 cm. from the ground and tilted backwards.

Trucks will not be used to transport people, as it can cause serious accidents. Neither can the truck be used to lift people, past experiences go back to us to think about fatal accidents that have happened in warehouses.

The driver must wear the personal protective equipment similar to those used in the ships where they move, but should always have the following work tools: helmet, non-slip safety boots with reinforced toe, safety gloves, protection of the ears [when the noise level exceeds 80 dB (A)] and safety glasses (if there is a risk to the eyes). Driver's clothing should not be excessively loose to prevent it from being caught. Only loads prepared correctly and that do not exceed the rated capacity of the truck will be transported. Finally, these are some of the basic recommendations in the use of forklifts, diesel, gas, electric; We hope they have been of great help.
