The town of Villanueva de la Serena is the first city in Spain to make available to the citizens the project 'Villanueva de la Serena Smart City', the National Plan of Intelligent Cities of the Digital Agenda, in which 23 other municipalities participate of all country.

The results of the work carried out for just over a year have been released on Monday by the mayor of Villanueva de la Serena, Miguel Angel Gallardo, and the Deputy Director of Intelligent Cities and Open Data Red.es, José Ignacio Sánchez Valdenebro.

The initiative has aimed to create a more "friendly" environment for citizens and visitors of the municipality, "while achieving greater social well-being through the use of information and communication technologies."

Likewise, it aims to create a more efficient and sustainable municipality, favor economic and business development and increase savings and quality in the provision of public services.

To carry it out, the project has had a final budget of 317,000 euros, co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The actions carried out have resulted in the development of an open data portal, the creation of a municipal geographic information system and a spatial data infrastructure.

In addition, a mobile application has been designed for the citizen and the administration, a smart parking solution and a tool for the management of energy efficiency.

According to the mayor of Villanueva de la Serena, these solutions allow citizens to "participate in the processes of management and control of the city", as well as promote communication and information exchange with the municipal administration.

Gallardo stressed that this project "has much to do with the model of city we want, more livable and sustainable."

Villanueva de la Serena Smart City means, in short, the creation of a technological infrastructure that predisposes the municipality to the integration of other proposals of the smart area in urban environments to the benefit of the citizenship.
